Stéphane Grappelli (1908-1997) was an Italian - French jazz violinist.
He is best remembered for his pioneering work with gypsy jazz guitar legend Django Reinhardt in the Quintette du Hot Club de France in the 1930’s and 40’s.

I remember seeing him perform on British TV in the early 70’s with Andre Previn -as well as the Michael Parkinson Show - having no concept of the far reaching influence Grappelli had achieved previously.
The unique observation is that Grapelli was equally comfortable in a classical setting as well as jazz.
However his style of playing was definitely in the jazz swing camp.
He did prefer to stay in that style and not venture into bebop or modern jazz as Django did in the 50’s.
By the mid 70’s he fronted a guitar trio touring format that recalled his influential gypsy jazz work with Django - that was enormously successful.

He played many sessions including Oscar Peterson , Duke Ellington -even on Pink Floyds 1975 album “Wish You Were Here”!
