Joan Armatrading “Love and Affection” soulful and original songwriting

Great memories of this 1976 tune from Joan Armatrading - which was a top 10 hit in the UK.

Majestic , acoustic and soulful -Joan’s songwriting was confident -and thankfully record companies at that time allowed the artist’s personality to shine.

From the opening guitar arpeggios and the intriguing lyric, I was drawn in - as were her fans :

I am not in love but I'm open to persuasion…

Its a delicate song about being open to love that just resonates in its simplicity.

Beautifully recorded by top producer Glyn Johns (Beatles,The Stones,The Who etc) and assisted by top flight players including Jerry Donahue on guitar - this tune really became Joans signature tune throughout her career.

She would be a familiar fixture on British TV and have a great career, as her sound developed to a more fuller band sound on subsequent records, like “The Weakness in Me”, “Drop The Pilot” and  “Willow”.

However ,her beguiling original and catchy melodies would carry her fans through the decades and the many albums that followed “Love and Affection”.
