The Way We Wore - a journey through music and fashion by Robert Elms

This is a must read for all lovers of music , fashion and popular culture!

Crombies , Blakeys , Harrington jackets , Budgie jackets , Feather cuts , Wayfinder shoes with animal footprints - its all here and a trip down memory lane for those of us growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in the UK!

This wonderful book by esteemed broadcaster and writer Robert Elms really lays out the cultural significance of fashion through the years and the intersection with music.

He puts you right back into the late 60’s, and beyond -sorting out the rival youth gangs of the time - whether you were into Northern Soul or progressive rock.

He lays it all out with wit and candor - and at times its hard not to have a good laugh reminiscing about the delights of high waister bags - ultra flared trousers with sails like the Cutty Sark!

The book also traces the changing live music and club scene.

Kindred spirits gathering and spawning the post-punk venues that would follow, such as Heaven and the Blitz in the late 70’s.

The magic of this book is that it rekindles long distant memories of 70’s fashion disasters and triumphs -but at the same time shows an evolving youth culture and innovation-that puts the reader back in those times.

Outside of the UK the descriptions may not make much sense - even in the US - but for any avid Anglophile or follower of youth culture - its a great read.

The bands and artists of this era would be soon on MTV in the 80’s playing to a global audience - but their stylistic roots were from the previous decade.

Highly recommended!
