After Midnight - a sumptuous album by Nat King Cole and his Trio

This album released in 1957 is a personal favorite - and sumptuous is the best way I can describe it.

It just oozes smooth sophistication and charm : the glorious analog recording at Capitol Studios Hollywood and musicianship is excellent.

Lets not forget the songs - all from the golden era of mid 20th century Great American Songbook.

Classics such as Duke Ellingtons “Caravan” and even “Route 66” by Bobby Troup are on here.

Stuff Smith plays his trademark violin and there’s bongos as well as the horns.

However its the dextrous piano playing of Nat Cole and his velvet voice that seals the deal here.

Later projects would have him more featured as vocalist - however this trio format really shows what a superb all round talent he was.
