Farewell Danny Thompson - bass player extraordinaire who inspired generations of musicians

The great bass player Danny Thompson recently passed away aged 86.

A virtuoso on the British jazz and jazz folk scene - he is fondly remembered with his freeform style that propelled Pentangle in the late 60’s as well as his work with another freeform maestro John Martyn.

His range of artists and inspirational collaborators is astounding - have worked with British bluesman  Alexis Korner in the 60’s - as well as Nick Drake in the 70’s - and Kate Bush later - to name just a few.

It seemed like his inspiring and unique style reached multiple generations.

What made his style unique was he never was content to just hold down the root - he was adventurous in playing counter melodies and bass runs.

As a result - he never felt like a sideman.
