George Orwell - “Down and Out In Paris and London” - a look at society.

Certainly one of my favorite authors and required reading for everyone.

This book is an examination of the wondering poor in the lower rungs of society.

His handling of the subject matter is respectful and never demeaning to the people finding themselves in this strata of society.

Published in 1933 Orwell writes about a profound sense of social injustice.

The Parisian episode is fascinating as Orwell describes the employment hierarchy in French restaurants - as the main character works on the bottom tier as a plongeur and dish washer.

Switch to London - and the description of living on the streets and finding hostels to sleep is haunting for the homeless.

The book provokes a wider look at the inequality of capitalism and the class structure - by illustrating how the class system works and navigating within it.

His message is still as valid today as it was in 1933.
