Independent movie making (and teaching entertainment business) in Memphis is thriving with the new movie: The Coffee Shop

The Coffee Shop is the second independent movie produced in Memphis , TN under the leadership of Angela D. Green Esq. -Executive Director of On Location :Memphis (OL:M).

Initially the organization hosted an international film festival in Memphis - but over time has evolved into a cinematic eco system that involves all aspects of movie production - including licensing of cleared and copyrighted original music from local music producers for movies produced in Memphis - as well as for sound supervisors seeking film and TV music worldwide.

Quite simply, the On Location:Memphis mission is:

Teaching entertainment business through real life application.

In an era of federal budget cuts for education and arts grants - the activities of On Location:Memphis are admirable in developing all aspects of film making locally.

I asked Angela about the inspiration to make The Coffee Shop :

“The film was the 2nd project produced by Memphis Movie Production Apprentice Program. Once we wrapped (the first movie) "5th Step", I needed another short script to produce to keep the program going.

I reached out to Christie Taylor (Memphis based Entertainment and PR Executive) to see if she had any.

She sent me a couple to read.

I chose The Coffee Shop.”

Filmed locally in Memphis, the film follows an introverted tech genius , who embarks on a 30 day challenge to meet new people, finding an unexpected connection with a fellow tech enthusiast at a cozy neighborhood coffee shop.

Additionally , the engaging original soundtrack was composed and produced by local music producer, composer and mix engineer Walter Person.

Walter has had sync placements with Netflix (Tyler Perry’s “Beauty in Black”) - and has worked with The Bar-Kays ,8Ball & MJG ,Gangsta Boo, Edwin Hawkins and many other notable artists.

I asked Walter how he approached the music for the movie:

“Inspiration was a “Love Jones” type of vibe.

I wanted to create the feel of friends and family in a familiar place. Definitely a Neo soul approach to the music, but also adding Memphis elements where needed. For example the smooth walk-in scene has an Isaac Hayes/ Shaft feel about it and I also added some Memphis rap in there as well -since our music is all over the world right now. “

The soundtrack was composed , recorded and mixed by Walter at his Sonstorm Studio - with additional musician Louis Hayslett.

In summary:

Exceptional movies are being made faster and cheaper all over the world -and the work of On Location: Memphis is ensuring Memphis will have a larger part in the film making revolution.

Go check out the movie and the great work of On Location: Memphis !
