James Dyson “Invention: A Life of Learning Through Failure”

A great read by renowned British entrepreneur and inventor James Dyson.

The mantra “never give up” - rings so true in his account of his life of inventing and perseverance against all obstacles

He has weathered it all via his various companies and innovations .

He describes the struggles with technology, underhand competitors and government and legislative lethargy.

Its all here and a great read!

He is most famous for the 5,127 prototypes of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner that would transform the way houses are cleaned.

His description of struggling with an ancient Hoover vacuum cleaner, in his younger years-plugging into a ceiling power outlet , whilst dealing with a hose and the paper dust bag and redistributing the dust everywhere- is priceless!

Equally fascinating is his ball barrow innovation of using a soccer ball sized wheel instead of the regular wheel on wheel barrows that had been used for a hundred years!

As a result his barrow was easier to use in soft soil and more laterally stable with heavy loads on uneven ground.

Sadly he lost control of his invention and the patent - a harsh business lesson he never forgot!

His entrepreneurial drive and vision was the legacy of his time studying at the Royal College of Art in the 1960’s.

Go check it out - a great lesson in ‘thinking outside the box”!
