Johnny Hates Jazz : “Shattered Dreams” and a timeless aesthetic.

In the mid eighties there was a move in the UK heralded by Sade , Stings first solo records, Simply Red, Spandau Ballet  etc- to a smooth sophisticated jazz aesthetic.

Amongst this polished pop jazz was the break out 1987 hit album by Johnny Hates Jazz : “Turn Back The Clock”.

Their band name is curious and humorous all at the same time - no doubt a dig at jazz purists - and showcased their move to a modern jazz feel and sound.

Just my assumption - but it made you take note of what they sounded like.

The big singles from the album were “I Don't Want To Be A Hero” , the magnificent “Shattered Dreams” and of course the title track “Turn Back The Clock”.

Working with famed record producer Mickie Most at RAK Studios,London - this record captured the times and was their biggest commercial success.

The songwriting by vocalist Clark Datchler is special and “Shattered Dreams” has drama ,excitement and a majestic feel- all rolled into one song!

In some ways it feels timeless and could certainly stand up if released today.

A great song, a great image and a great album that simply lives on and still sounds fresh and vital.
