Julie London - the taste and sophistication of her “Julie Is Her Name” album from 1955

This beautiful album was very well received when it was released.

Julie London and her smooth sultry vocals, magnificently presented the range of jazz tunes in a most intimate way.

In part, its the simple arrangements- with London accompanied only by jazz guitar great Barney Kessel and Ray Leatherwood on bass.

Recorded at the famed Western Recorders in Hollywood,CA - this album has a sonic depth and warmth that only tube equipment and analog tape can deliver.

In fact you do not even miss having drums regardless how soft they would be played - in some ways they would have masked the beauty of the guitar work and the sonorous depth of the bass lines - that can swing just fine!

The stand out track and most recognizable is of course “Cry Me A River” - with the wonderful use of the saturated echo chamber effect on the vocals on the fade out.

Again - its the sound of a real echo chamber that places this album firmly in the 1950’s and is almost like a time capsule to an earlier and simpler time.

One of my favorite albums - sit back , pour a large drink and enjoy this album (on vinyl if possible) !
