Luiz Bonfa - an overlooked architect of 1960's Bossanova

I came across Luiz Bonfa the outstanding Brazilian bossanova guitarist and songwriter, via a 1966 Catarina Valente album.

Though not a household name his melodies resonate as much as Jobim or Sergio Mendes.

In 1967 Bonfa released his self titled LP “Luiz Bonfa”

Its a lush well produced album and really is an amalgam of 60’s jazz pop with 60’s bossanova.

Some purists of either genre may object to this pairing - but to me it unleashes a glorious soundscape of strings , percussion , flute and harmony vocals - as well as the precise nylon string guitar of Bonfa.

Its a wonderful relaxing album - there’s even birdsong on a track!

The result is Bonfa’s compositions are brought to life in a fuller context and the melodies stand up with this more broad arrangement and orchestration.

A personal favorite track would be “Oba Oba” with the harmony vocals of Bonfa and guest vocalist Pat Kirby.

Its delicate with an irresistible melody.

It was also covered by Astrud Gilberto.

So check out the great Luiz Bonfa and enjoy!
