In 1979 in the UK the charts were awash with a cross section of edgy New Wave (Squeeze, Elvis Costello, XTC,Nick Lowe) as well as pounding disco classics.
The memorable Patrick Hernandez hit “Born To Be Alive” seemed to be everywhere that summer as well as "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" by Sylvester.
Such diverse genres co-existed and even if you were an up and coming New Wave fan - the catchiness of those disco classics was infectious.
You can’t keep a good melody down and I have no doubt they found influence in the 80’s with Soft Cell, Depeche Mode,Human League and Heaven 17.
A couple of ironic facts to be noted: the Hernandez hit started life in a rock style in 1973 and was shelved until later disco glory.
Additionally the unknown Madonna was hired as a dancer for Hernandez’ touring band at the time!

So give these tracks a spin and luxuriate in the memories of Studio 54 or your local 70’s disco, drinking Pernod and blackcurrant -and dancing till the early hours!
