For those of us who look back on the early 70’s glam rock scene in the UK - the petite bass wielding Suzi Quatro was right up there having hits alongside Slade and T Rex.
Although only 5’ 2” she had a drive, a rocking image and huge work ethic that has sustained her career for over 50 years.
Its a great brisk read - written in her breezy and straightforward style.

Inspired by Elvis and the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in the 50’s and early 60’s and borrowing the leather jumpsuit image from the ’68 Elvis Comeback Special - she like so many other musicians desired a career in music.
The fascinating thing is the random events and chance meetings that make it happen for most ,are so rare.
However:
A chance meeting with UK record producer Mickie Most in the late 60’s (Donovan ,Jeff Beck Group , The Animals , Hot Chocolate) would bring Suzi to London at age 20 in 1970.
It is in the UK that she would craft her image and sound and have the huge hits.
Her style and image would inspire a later generation of female rock artists: Joan Jett and the Runaways being notable.
Its great to read of Joan Jett standing at the side of the show watching Suzi’s shows at the peak of her career - being dazzled no doubt!
Acting (Happy Days) and theater work would follow.
Never content to stand still ,this is an interesting read with Suzi looking at the leather clad rocking image and the real Suzi Quatro - as two separate entities.
Spirituality, child birth , family relations and their respective difficulties are all covered in depth - and by the end we see a person who has crafted her own destiny with an inquisitive mind and determination.
Its a great read and an inspiration for anyone in the arts who wants success without compromise.
