The Chantels -the emotive sound of 50’s soul and pop

I came across this all girl group on a 1950/60’s soul and pop compilation album.

I had a vague awareness of them - however it was the track “Every Night (I Pray)” from 1958 ,with its descending piano line and emotive vocal- that really resonated with me.

It seems the passing of time has pushed some of these amazing Doo-wop , soul and early R&B artists into obscurity.

The group comprised of five girls from the Bronx ,NY.

It’s been reported that unlike other groups inspired by gospel music - this group was influenced by classical music and hymns.

Lead singer Arlene Smith had received classical training and performed at Carnegie Hall aged 12.

The group enjoyed several hits - including “Maybe” in 1958 before being dropped by their label in 1959.

Nonetheless these hit singles are like a snapshot of an earlier more innocent time, where sheer talent shone through and delivered the emotion that connected with the listener.

In a way it was the gateway to 60’s Motown classics.
