Although this album met more of a muted critical response at the time of its release - in retrospect this really is an underrated album.
Known as the “audition album” numerous guitarists were auditioned to replace the recently departed Mick Taylor.
Some made the final album and their differences in technique and tone really makes this a great listen.
Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat) make the record and Mandel’s solo on “Hot Stuff” makes for a welcome departure with his distinctive Mu-Tron envelope filter pedal guitar tone.

Other contributors on piano, organ and synths are the great Billy Preston (also backing vocals) and Nicky Hopkins.
Check out the great slab of soul goodness “Melody” (inspired by Billy Preston) - for me this adds a sonic diversity to the album and keeps the listeners interest throughout the albums’ improvisational journey.
The single “Fool to Cry” brings the same aesthetic.
Different genres abound - everything from reggae, soul, funk and R&B.
“Hey Negrita” - has that loose Stones feel as it features Keith Richards and Ron Wood.
It would herald in the next Stones guitar player and the sonic template for the duration of their career up to today!
Check it out - definitely a great album during a time of transition in the Stones camp in 1975.
