The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - 1970’s theatrical originality in the time of pre-Punk

I first became aware of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in the mid 70’s with their cover of the Tom Jones classic “Delilah" in 1975.

This tough glam rock Scottish band had a theatrical quality to them, embodying everything from mime to 18th century regency costumes evoking pirates and beyond!

I particularly remember a BBC “Old Grey Whistle Test” performance of them doing “Give My Compliments To The Chef”.

Sinister lyrics about the “goose step” , a menacing vocal delivery by Alex and a textured musical arrangement from electric piano to rhythm changes and hard rock riffing - all in one song!

Complete originality and irreverence to convention , pushing the envelope and any other superlative you wish to mention-this was a precursor to Punk (but with musicality) -that would follow in a few short years!

Fantastic stuff and worth checking out!
