The Smooth Jazz Blues of Irene Reid – “Room For One More” LP (1965)

Although not as well known as the other contemporary popular jazz singers of the time (Ella, Dinah or Sarah) - Irene Reid stands toe to toe with the best.

To quote from the album liner notes - she possesses the fluid perfection of Ella Fitzgerald, but can also turn on the blues inflections and earthiness of Dinah Washington.

However she maintains a smoothness and an appealing vocal timbre on this album.

Recorded with a stellar lineup of the best jazz musicians of the time (including Kenny Burrell on guitar) at the famed Van Gelder Studios in 1965 - the album is polished ,feels natural and the performances never stilted or strained.

Broadway tunes as well as standards are covered.

Even the “Theme from Bewitched” is tackled and delivered in a beautiful syncopated way.

In fact the rhythm of her vocals are what seals the deal for me - they swing with an irresistible joy.

A lovely album and worth a listen!
